The book “From Lithuania to Santiniketan. Schlomit Flaum & Rabindranath Tagore” is a report on the encounters of young Jewish women with 20th-century Indian thinkers, including Tagore and Gandhi.
The text compiled by Israeli author Shimon Lev is a translation of Flaum’s diaries, mostly written in Hebrew.
The book tells of the time that Flaum spent in Santiniketan from 1922 to 1924. It also contains copies of letters that were not published between Flaum and Tagore between 1922 and 1940.
Flaum met Rabindranath Tagore in the early decades of the twentieth century. She then did a teacher training course at Columbia University.
Flaum, who was born in Lithuania in 1893 and died in Israel at the age of 70, offered to teach at his school in West Bengal – a proposal that Tagore agreed
She taught German at Visva Bharati and was headmistress of a kindergarten in Santiniketan. The book describes how Flaum interacted with leaders of the Indian independence movement during their stay in Santiniketan, including Gandhi, Annie Besant and Sarojini Naidu.
